“Can I REALLY sell?” This is a question that I get asked alot.
In fact, that isn’t really true! I get told – “I can’t sell” A LOT of times.
“I just don’t know how to tell them about my offerings” is another statement that I hear over and over each and every day!
I always answer it with – EVERYONE CAN SELL! You just haven’t found YOUR WAY yet!
You see, I ALWAYS avoided selling. You could catch me, enthusiastically, in every area of business but not in the sales side.
I once ran a social enterprise around homelessness and furnishing their houses. We sold from a few warehouses to fund those who could not afford to purchase furniture.
There was an excellent sales team but at times, when it was busy or others were on holiday, everyone had to pitch in!
Now ask me to drive the lorries, help load or unload them, answer the phones, even take process the sale – not a problem!
But heaven forbid, you actually want me to go and meet people and help them decide on their purchase aka selling!!! EEK!
You couldn’t see me for dust!
Start running your own business and suddenly you realise that….SHOCK HORROR! You now have to SELL!
Wow was that a wake up call for me!
And I struggled! Boy did I struggle!
Why? I hadn’t found my way of selling yet.
I looked at the stereotypical manner of sales – push push push (and that didn’t work for me).
I looked at how others were selling – making folks feel bad, always promoting themselves and their offerings without giving any support or tips and hints (and that didn’t sit well with me).
I looked at building relationships through face to face networking (this worked but was so time consuming).
And then I went online!
OMG! Everyone is doing things differently. I got so confused about what was the right way, the wrong way, the too fast way, the too slow way – I didn’t sell anything!
So how did I turn it around and start teaching others how to sell?
I found my way! So of course I did undertake some learning, took courses, read books, watched webinars and then I realised!
I have been selling my whole life! I just wasn’t selling business stuff.
It was the way I communicated daily with:
- my friends
- my kids
- my team members, my colleagues, my exec board.
- my teachers
- my family.
Each time I can trace back the relationship building and the selling!

- a mobile phone or app they should get and use
- a tv programme you’ve fallen in love with
- a book that has transformed your thinking
- a membership club that can help them loose weight, learn how to knit etc
- a theatre production that you want them to come with you to
- the vegetables that are good for them (to my kids here lol)
These are all types of sales! You need to build the relationship so that others know, like and trust you and then they are interested in what it is you have to say, your opinion and your choices.
